One of our greatest passions at Ballas Chiropractic is helping people with chronic conditions return to the activities they enjoy most in life. Osteoarthritis and spinal disc degeneration, which are accompanied by persistent pain and restricted mobility, are the two chronic issues that we encounter the most at the practice. These conditions often significantly reduce patients’ quality of life and keep them from doing what they love most.
What to Expect As a Patient
Your initial visit will take about 45 minutes and will include a physical exam and digital X-rays. Your detailed medical history will be compiled and discussed with the doctor. The goal is to exchange information to get an understanding of your issue. By looking at your X-rays, the doctor can see if your condition is mild, moderate, or severe.
It’s important for your chiropractor to know how long the issue has been there so that we can give you realistic expectations. While we can’t reverse any damage that’s been done, we can help you manage your condition and get you stable.
When Will I Get Better?
One of the questions our chiropractors get asked often is, “How long will it take to get better?” What Dr. Suber always tells people, especially someone who has had a chronic spinal condition or complaint, is that for every year they’ve had that complaint, it takes about a month of care to start to heal.
So, if somebody has had a condition for a few years, one to two months of care can provide significant relief. “If your pain now is a 7 out of 10, and I can get you down to a normal 2 out of 10, that’s a huge success for me,” said Dr. Suber.
The Value of Regular Care & Other Healthy Habits
The saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” certainly applies when it comes to chiropractic care. By getting adjusted regularly, you could halt or slow the progression of chronic conditions.
In addition to chiropractic care, eating an anti-inflammatory diet and exercising regularly within reason can be helpful. We also offer SoftWave Tissue Regeneration Technologies to try to regenerate the tissue in the affected area and prevent that area from degenerating further.
Get Back to What You Love
Dr. Suber asks every patient who comes in the following: “If I can wave a magic wand and this condition goes away, what does that mean for you?” Patients often reply that it means playing with their grandchildren more, being able to perform their job without having to take days off, and traveling.
“Those are the things for me as a doctor that I hang on to and constantly communicate back to a patient because it’s one thing if the patient feels better, but it’s another thing if they say that they want to play tennis or pickleball again, and three or four weeks later, they’re back to playing,” said Dr. Suber.
It’s also vital that both the chiropractor and the patient do their part. Dr. Suber stresses that he will do his part, but he also tells patients what they need to do to improve. This collaborative approach results in a greater likelihood of success for patients.
